Comment 10-Who taught you the most things? Why the mother tongue?

Nowadays, people all over the world study a foreign language like English, Spanish, German or Chinese with the objective of living and working in countries where these languages are spoken. Learning a foreign language benefits everyone.

On the one hand, knowing a foreign language makes it easier to travel or to find a better job. In addition, it can help you understand other cultures when you travel abroad. The art, traditions and culture of any country, can be better understood if you have some knowledge of their language. Moreover, studies have shown that bilingual people are smarter than people who speak only one language. Multilingual people are even smarter. Learning a foreign language helps our brain in many ways. It allows us to make connections faster and remember things better.

On the other hand, learning foreign languages has disadvantages, too, such us the cost of the course and the time it requires. Furthermore, you have to be cautious, because while you are learning other languages, you can forget your mother tongue. When the native language is not maintained, important links to family and other community members may be lost. Until the age of about 12, a person’s language skills are relatively vulnerable to change. Studies have found that even nine-year-olds can almost completely forget their first language when they are removed from their country of birth or if they speak more in a foreign language than their native one. In adults, the first language is unlikely to disappear entirely except in extreme circumstances.

To conclude, there are numerous benefits to learning a foreign language. Travel and work are just two of them. Language skills also make us smarter and better.

Comment 09- Never will I ghost my students!

Halloween is a celebration observed in lots of countries on 31st October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows´Day! How do people celebrate it?

To begin with, Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. Every garden is decorated with the main symbol of this feast – pumpkin. Usually, it is used to cut funny faces on it and is considered as a repellant from evil spirits. Another most popular Halloween symbol is black color that is why almost every costume includes something black.

Secondly, Halloween continues to be extremely popular with kids of all ages; 85 to 90 percent of children around the world go trick-or-treating or engage in other Halloween festivities every year, and many adults also join in on the fun. In fact, 65 percent of adults between 18 and 34 attended Halloween costume parties or other celebrations.

To sum up, Halloween is very famous all around the world and both children and adults enjoy it!

Comment 08- Listen to Nature

The public awareness campaign, called Nature is Speaking, turns the tables on "saving the planet" and reminds us that it's us humans, not nature, who need saving. ¨Giving nature a voice¨ might make it clear to all of us that the planet will evolve with or without humans, because nature has been around billions of years longer than humans. Are we doing enough to help saving our nature?

Firstly, we all know green spaces bring numerous health benefits. For example, experiences in nature can lead to decreased blood pressure and levels of the stress hormone cortisol, assist with direct attention fatigue, and increase cognitive function. Nature might even buffer the impact of stress.

Secondly, for thousands of years our delicate planet has maintained a perfect balance between land and sea, and provided everything that we, and all the animals that live on it, need. However, warnings about climate change, carbon emissions and our over-use of plastic and waste are to be taken seriously. As a result, many of us are now making an effort to play a part in helping to end the cycle of waste, such as cycling or walking instead of using the car to go to work or to school, recycling our household waste properly or turning off appliances we don’t really need.

In conclusion, our precious planet´s future is looking green as long as we all play a part in helping it get there! All individuals and communities around the world should be taking a stand for future generations and the preservation of human life on Earth.

Comment 07- Can we live without lies?

A lie is an assertion that is believed to be false, typically used with the purpose of deceiving someone. We lie all the time, despite the fact that it costs us considerably more mental effort to lie than to tell the truth. We lie to promote ourselves, protect ourselves and to hurt or avoid hurting others.

On the one hand, lying is extremely stressful. It causes you to be constantly looking over your shoulder and wondering who might be finding you out. You are always running through the lies you have told in your head, trying to keep track of what you have told to which person, and what is the next lie you need to tell. When you are honest, you do not have those worries or the negative consequences of your lies.

On the other hand, according to researches, the average person hears up to 200 lies a day and it is estimated that we lie up to nine times a day. Moreover, lying may seem simple and harmless at first, but just like any addiction, you will soon find yourself trapped in your lies, more than you could have ever imagined.

To sum up, we live in a world full of lies and liars and, in my opinion, I think being honest is very important because it keeps us away from problems and it helps in developing good attributes like kindness, discipline, truthfulness and moral integrity.

Comment 06- Pau Gasol says Spanish teens are not fit enough

Obesity is a complex disease involving an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity isn't just a cosmetic concern. It is a medical problem that increases your risk of other diseases and health problems.

Firstly, factors that may contribute to weight gain among children include genes, eating habits, physical inactivity, TV, computer, phone, and other screen time, sleep habits, medical conditions or medications. Over the past four decades, obesity rates in children and adolescents have soared globally, and continue to do so in many countries. Nowadays, most of the teenagers spend more and more time with their mobile phones, having a sedentary life and eating junk food.

Secondly, being obese as a child comes with a high likelihood of being obese as an adult and the many health consequences that come with it, including the increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.

In my opinion, I think teenagers should do more exercise, have a healthy and balanced diet, in order to prevent obesity and health problems as an adult.

Comment 05- Better as a team!!!

Violence against women (VAW), also known as gender-based violence and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), are violent acts where the victims are primarily or exclusively women or girls. Such violence is often considered a form of hate crime, committed against women or girls specifically because they are female, and can take many forms.

To begin with, violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions. At least, one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime with the abuser usually someone known to her. There are different types of women abuse, such us, violence occurring in the family or domestic unit, physical and mental aggression, emotional and psychological abuse, rape and sexual abuse, crimes committed in the name of honour, female genital and sexual mutilation and other traditional practices harmful to women, such as forced marriages; sexual harassment and intimidation at work and violation of the human rights of women in situations of armed conflict.

Secondly, the best way to end violence against women and girls is to prevent it from happening. Prevention should start early in life, by educating and working with young boys and girls promoting respectful relationships and gender equality. The United Nations has assigned 25th November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. One of the aims of the day is to highlight that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden.

In conclusion, violence against women and girls is an unacceptable violation of basic human rights. It is also so widespread that ending it must be a global public health priority.
STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN!!!!

Comment 04- Teenage gambling

Gambling means taking part in any activity or game where you risk money, food & drinks or any valuable objects, in order to win. Studies show that, although many people participate in gambling as a form of recreation or even as a means to gain an income, gambling, like any behavior that involves variation in brain chemistry, can become a harmful, behavioral addiction.

To begin with, there are different types of gambling, such as casino games, bingo, card and table games, internet gambling or lottery. Gambling can easily become a problem that affects not just the person, but also the person’s family and friends. For some people, gambling can become as serious an addiction as drugs, tobacco, or alcohol.

On the other hand, reports show that more and more teenagers are gambling nowadays and most of them are addicted to it. Gambling can be innocent at first, but it can turn from a social behavior to a compulsion and cause problems for teenagers. They develop the urge to keep on gambling despite its harmful negative consequences.

To sum up, gambling is as addictive as drugs or alcohol and it is very important to inform and educate people and especially teenagers about how dangerous it can be for the society.

Comment 03- Talking about tourism, all that glitters is not gold!

Tourism is travelling for pleasure or business and it can be domestic (within the traveller's own country) or international. Many places in the world rely heavily on tourism as a key source of income and employment. But, is tourism harmful?

On the one hand, one of the main advantages of tourism and the reason why it has been promoted so much, especially in developing countries, is that it brings in a lot of money. In addition, tourism provides many jobs because all hotels, bars, shops and restaurants need staff. Moreover, it gives the tourist destinations a chance to show themselves off and raise their profile in the world.

On the other hand, tourism can be harmful, too, because it can often cause environmental damage, such as greenhouse gas emissions from air travel, and lot of waste in popular locations. Tourism contributes to pollution.

In conclusion, tourism could be very important for the development of many countries. However, the increasing tourism activities could damage the environment and cause the value or the nature of different places to be vanished.

Comment 02- Rubbish!!!

Global warming is a huge topic at the moment and one of the reasons is the rubbish we produce. Nearly everything we do leaves behind some kind of waste. Households create ordinary garbage which consists of everyday items we use and then throw away, such as food, plastics, furniture, clothes, bottles, paper, etc. The fact is people produce too much rubbish and protecting the environment should be everybody´s concern today!

To begin with, we should know that the main part of the rubbish is either burned or taken to enormous landfill sites. They are both harmful for the environment! We can help the planet by reusing or recycling household rubbish! Most of the garbage generated in the household can be recycled and reused. For example, organic kitchen waste such as leftover foodstuff, vegetable peels, spoilt or dried fruits and vegetables, plastic, paper and glass are some of the items that can be reused or recycled. We should all have in our homes two or three waste bins: one for paper waste, another one for plastic waste and the last one for organic waste. Sort your rubbish!

In addition, recycling saves energy, reduces rubbish burning and saves natural resources. As recycling saves energy it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps protect our planet from the climate change.

To sum up, producing less rubbish and recycling waste, have a lot of benefits for both people and the environment.

Comment 01- Climate emergency!!!

Climate change is one of the greatest environmental threats facing the planet. The entire planet is experiencing a climate change and human action is mostly responsible for it. All the changes have an enormous impact on people’s lives and ecosystems.

On the one hand, it has been reported that the average global temperature has raised by 1 degree in the last 30 years. The increasing of global temperature is caused by the increased emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Increases in ocean temperature and the Earth´s surface temperature, widespread melting of snow and ice, and the rising of sea level are some of the evidences regarding climate change.

On the other hand, plastic pollution is another global concern. Plastic pollution is caused due to the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment. It remains in the environment for hundreds of years and causes air, water and land pollution. As a consequence, lots of birds, animals and fishes die due to plastic pollution every year.

All in all, I strongly believe that we shoud all take the appropiate steps to save the planet from the consequences of global warming and pollution. It´s important that we all reduce both air and earth pollution.

Subject: complaint about food and service

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to complain about a meal we had in your restaurant yesterday.

Our problem started as soon as we arrived at 8 pm yesterday. We had booked a table for two but when we arrived, there were no free tables and we had to wait for more than 30 minutes to sit down. Then, when we decided what to order from the menu, not all the dishes were available, and the fish we ordered tasted awful. In addition, when we told the waiter about that, he was really rude to us.

We had eaten in your restaurant before, but this was the first time we received such bad service. We expected quality food and service but we were completely disappointed. I would like you to improve the quality of your dishes and service. Thank you for your co-operation.

Yours faithfully,
Mr. M. Livaditis
