Violence against women (VAW), also known as gender-based violence and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), are violent acts where the victims are primarily or exclusively women or girls. Such violence is often considered a form of hate crime, committed against women or girls specifically because they are female, and can take many forms.
To begin with, violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions. At least, one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime with the abuser usually someone known to her. There are different types of women abuse, such us, violence occurring in the family or domestic unit, physical and mental aggression, emotional and psychological abuse, rape and sexual abuse, crimes committed in the name of honour, female genital and sexual mutilation and other traditional practices harmful to women, such as forced marriages; sexual harassment and intimidation at work and violation of the human rights of women in situations of armed conflict.
Secondly, the best way to end violence against women and girls is to prevent it from happening. Prevention should start early in life, by educating and working with young boys and girls promoting respectful relationships and gender equality. The United Nations has assigned 25th November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. One of the aims of the day is to highlight that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden.
In conclusion, violence against women and girls is an unacceptable violation of basic human rights. It is also so widespread that ending it must be a global public health priority.
