A leap year is the year which has 366 days instead of 365. One extra day is added to the shortest month of the year-February. This year occurs every four years.
The Earth takes 365 days and 6 hours to complete its rotation around the sun. This means that the calendar year is about 6 hours shorter than the actual solar year and that´s why leap years are observed every four years.
This year, 2020, is a leap year, which means that February has 29 days instead of 28. So everyone born on February 29th gets to celebrate their birthday this year!
The phrase ¨leap year¨is used because each date of the calendar jumps ahead two days of the week instead of one.
